Skipper Development Program 2019-2020

Call for Expressions of Interest

Overview

Expressions of interest are invited for the Australian International Yngling Association (AIYA) Skipper Development Program.

The AIYA has launched the Skipper Development Program as a pilot program for the 2019-2020 sailing season.

The aim of the program is to increase participation in Yngling sailing at Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (RSYS) by training people with little prior experience to become competent and confident racing skippers.

The program is aimed at sailors with moderate to high levels of experience as racing crew, who are ready to develop their skills and experience as a racing skipper.

Program participants will be given 10 coaching / mentoring sessions with experienced skippers, in both racing and non-race conditions.

The program will be initially limited to a maximum of three (3) participants. However, further opportunities may become available, subject to boat and skipper availability.

Program Structure:

Program participants will be given 10 on-water mentoring sessions with a competent skipper in both racing and non-racing conditions, to develop their skills, knowledge and experience as a skipper.

By the end of the program, it is intended that participants will gain sufficient experience and confidence to skipper their own boats in Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (RSYS) Yngling races.

As part of the development program, the AIYA will:

  1. Facilitate access to club boats or negotiate arrangements to lease privately-owned boats; and
  2. Arrange 10 coaching / mentoring sessions with experienced skippers. These sessions may be held under non-racing conditions, or as part of RSYS races including Tuesday Ladies’ Twighlights, Friday Twighlights, Sunday Twighlights, Sping/Summer Main Series and Mini-Regattas; and
  3. Arrange crew if required; and
  4. Provide a logbook and a certificate, documenting participation in the program.

Participants in the program will be expected to:

  1. Cover the cost of boat hire or arrange access to a boat; and
  2. Cover the cost of race fees, where applicable; and
  3. Arrange crew if possible; and
  4. Pay a one – off administration fee of $15; and
  5. Have or obtain membership of a sailing club affiliated to Australian Sailing, in accordance with Rule 46 of the Australian Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing; and
  6. Have or obtain membership of the Australian International Yngling Association.

Expression of Interest (EOI) process:

Written expressions of interest (EOIs) should be sent by email to Adam.Tran@optusnet.com.au by 6pm on Monday 30 September 2019.

EOI submissions should provide the following information about the prospective participant:

  1. Prior sailing experience and training
  2. Future sailing goals and aspirations
  3. Availability to complete the program (i.e. on what days would the prospective participant be available for coaching / mentoring sessions?)
  4. Current sailing club membership details

The AIYA Training and Participation Committee will consider all EOIs and select an initial group of up to three (3) participants for the program.

Program participants will be selected on the basis of their suitability for the program, in accordance with a number of considerations. These considerations include, but are not limited to: prior sailing experience and training; future sailing goals and aspirations; and availability to complete the program.

A response to all EOIs will be provided as soon as practicable after 30 September 2019.
